Enid McKenzie
S.I. Thunder Bay
May 14, 1933 – August 27, 2025
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Enid Doreen McKenzie (nee Wilson) on August 27, 2025.
Enid was born in Birtle, Manitoba on Mother’s Day, May 14, 1933, the first born of Lorne and Doris Wilson. She grew up in Kenton, Manitoba. After high school, she attended the X-ray Technician Program at Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, graduating in 1954. Enid read a small ad in the Winnipeg paper advertising a vacancy for an X-ray Tech at McKellar General Hospital and got on the train and never looked back.
In 1955, Enid married Clifford James (Jim) McKenzie and they began their life together. Enid and Jim raised four children Jay, Jeff, Joanne and Jackie starting in Westfort, and moving to Riverview Drive in 1970. Later, she partnered with Jim in selling Real Estate, where together they enjoyed much success. Enid’s life was based on 4 pillars, love of family, music, church and community. Music was a huge part of our family and lives, spirited by Enid, a talented piano player and music lover! She loved her community and volunteered in many capacities over the years but most notably, her 39+ year involvement in a variety of roles with the local chapter of Soroptimist, as leader and pianist with the Senior Music Makers for 20+ years, and organist at Knox United on Pruden Street. Volunteer awards and recognition were not what drove Mom’s sense of philanthropy and compassion, but the many friendships and connections that she made over the years.
Enid is predeceased by husband Jim (2001), and many other beloved family and friends. She is survived by her children, Jay (Janis), Jeff (Rhonda), Joanne (Steve Kranyak) and Jackie (Tom Jackson). Proud Grandma and Great-Grandma to Paige, Hannah, Josh and Zach McKenzie; Megan (Nic Przada) and children: Chloe, Madelyn, Charlotte Enid Przada; Mitchell (Dee) and children: Victoria, Isabel, Elena McKenzie; Alexander and Jonathon (Brianne) and baby Lauren Kranyak; TJ and McKenzie Jackson; Kelly (Sarah) Laferriere and Danielle (Marc Walton) and children Conor and Juliette Walton. Also survived by her siblings, Jan (Mel) Dixon, Wayne (Eva) Wilson and Grant Wilson (Ajia Wang), in-laws, Gordon and Murray McKenzie and Joan (Walter) Duczeminski and families, as well as other extended family.
Thanks to the many people who enriched mom’s life over the years and especially to the residents and staff of Jasper Place who nurtured and enhanced her final years. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 11, 2025 at 11 am at First Wesley United Church, 130 Brodie St. N, Thunder Bay. If so desired, donations can be made to Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation.

Tanya dedicated 16 years of her life to her work at OCAS in Guelph. In her free time, she loved golfing, cross-stitching, and knitting. Her kindness and creativity will always be remembered.
Some Soroptimist members might have met Tanya Barber through online meetings. I believe Tanya’s greatest contribution to our Guelph Soroptimist Club was in the setting up of our Google Drive. She worked tirelessly to get everyone set up with email addresses and helped tutor us on how to log in and create files etc. She also used her IT skills in helping to set up our social media accounts. For fundraising she rallied her friends and coworkers to participate in all our fundraising efforts. She was a quiet person who loved her cat, knitting and golfing and was a huge supporter of our Soroptimist Club and its mission. She will be missed by all of us that knew her.

Her volunteer work was not just a pastime but a core part of who she was – a testament to her selfless nature and her desire to make a difference in the community. Another one of her passions was interior design, she loved working with her hands and redesigning the house. She never stopped designing in her mind and would speak extensively about her ideas to improve a room. Sandra was always there for the people she loved, offering a helping hand or a listening ear whenever needed. Her large circle of lifelong friends can attest to her loyalty and were a constant source of happiness and fulfillment in her life, and she, in turn, meant the world to them.

Helen Otrosina
S.I. Hamilton-Burlington
April 3, 1935 – September 5, 2024
Hamilton has lost a remarkable woman. A woman who believed that her purpose in life was to help others. The family of Helen Otrosina is sad to announce her passing on September 5, 2024, at the age of 89.
From a young age Helen was deeply connected to her community. She was a child of immigrants and was required to translate and assist them in adapting to their new country. Helen was proud of her parents who raised four children and through hard work were eventually able to purchase a house in Westdale. For most of her life Helen lived there and because she seemed to know everyone and everything on the street was given the title “Mayor of Arkell” by some. Helen assisted neighbours and friends who needed transportation to appointments and shopping. She was greatly saddened when she was told that it was no longer safe for her to drive. Helen really loved to drive.
Helen’s professional life was impressive. Her family had limited resources so post-secondary education was not an option for her. She made up for this by working very, very hard. After graduating from Westdale high school, Helen began working as a ward clerk at the Hamilton General Hospital. She worked up to the role of Medical Secretary for Dr. John Sibley. When he became Associate Dean of Education for the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University, Helen followed and became part of the supporting faculty team that pioneered the “Problem Based Learning” – a program which stressed hands-on experience for undergraduate medical students. Helen was involved in the annual screening and interview process for all McMaster medical school applicants when approximately 2200 applicants were vying for 100 positions.
She worked at McMaster for over 35 years and established herself as a powerhouse source of reliability in her knowledge, direction and leadership skills. She was never afraid of a challenge and would voice her opinion to all levels of academic and administration of the faculty. In her last decade of work, she spearheaded the management, control and operations of the Medical Student Admissions Office, which was appreciated across the whole campus. During this time, she also hired many young staff members and kickstarted some significant and prominent careers. Helen retired in 2000. During her time as a Medical Secretary, she was a member of the Canadian Association of Medical Secretaries and attended many national and international conferences and at one time was the President of the Ontario Association.
Despite her demanding work life and assisting her aging parents, Helen found time to write personal notes to people she knew who were hospitalized, in long-term care or alone so they would know that someone was thinking of them. She offered, if not her time, but regular financial donations to charities in Hamilton. Helen assisted at the Good Shepherd, was a supporter of Amnesty International, received a certificate of recognition for her 18 years of blood donation at the Red Cross and even collected newspapers for use at the now closed Hamilton Aviary among many of her charitable contributions.
Helen’s commitment to service also extended to Soroptimist International where she was a Charter Member of the Hamilton-Burlington Club. She was a member from 1979, until her passing. Helen held numerous positions within the club but dedicated significant time and energy overseeing 38 library book sale fundraisers, which raised nearly three hundred thousand dollars for club projects.
Known for her engaging personality, Helen had a gift for conversation and gab. Her vibrant presence and ceaseless determination will make her greatly missed. Helen spent the last few months of her life in hospital where she felt that it was her job and purpose, right up to her last moments of her life to bring companionship to the lonely, and joy and laughter to the suffering.
Helen will forever be missed by her family and long-term friends, who she regarded as family. We would like to thank Dr. Solomon and the staff of 3W/3E at St Peter’s Hospital for their kindness, understanding and professionalism, and for making Helen’s final journey a surprisingly joyous one.
Helen Otrosina was warm, kind, compassionate, supportive, understanding, practical, generous, frugal, helpful, chatty, industrious, interesting and tireless. She was a lot of things but, she was our Helen. We love you and miss you.
Helen wanted to remind everyone to find time to dance, sing and laugh because the journey of life is short.
As per Helen’s wishes, no memorial will be held – however donations in her memory can be made to: Soroptimist International of Hamilton-Burlington. c/o: Treasurer, 1951 Snake Road, Burlington, Ontario L7P 4Y1
